Volumes for Sound: Voice // // The Kitchen
Volumes for Sound: Voice Saturday, December 16, 7pm Admission $5 This event brings together experimental vocalists Odeya Nini and Tatyana Tenenbaum to explore the possibilities of Melissa Dubbin and Aaron S. Davidson’s Volumes for Sound as conduits for the voice. When hooked up to microphones and electronic instruments, Davidson and Dubbin’s sculptures capture, amplify, torque, and reshape emitted sound. Choreographer and composer Tatyana Tenenbaum explores the phenomenal space of the singing body. Untitled Work for Voice is a backstage musical; a show about a show whose production is never seen in completion. Five performers breathe sound and form into space, causing histories and narratives to appear and rupture. Singing bodies give way to vibration, unraveling the tightly choreographed music of American desire. Tenenbaum asks: “If we are the inheritors of white America–with our interwoven histories of coercion, direct compliance, and passive complicity– then are we capable of…

You and I (work-in-progress) is a collaboration between Hadar Ahuvia and myself. It’s been a long time in the works. What began as an embodied convo at DanceRoulette a few years ago has spurred ongoing penmanship, dialogue and radical accountability to our shared stakes in repairing violence in our lineages and addressing the ways we have culturally complied with colonization. I am thrilled to be sharing this week-long residency and night of performance with Lorene Bouboushian and Leslie Cuyjet, with…

You and I (working title) is an equal collaboration between Hadar Ahuvia and Tatyana Tenenbaum that makes space for repairing our Jewishness within the ongoing wreckage of colonialism. It is a prying open of our Jewish diasporic histories and ‘folklore’. For Hadar it is the collectivist Zionist project and its culture, song and dance; for Tatyana, her grandparents work as Broadway producers, sewing seeds of the American dream through musical theater. We are examining how our Ashkenazi families participated in…
